Welcome to Oak Hill! We know that visiting a church for the first time can sometimes be an overwhelming experience, which is why we want you to know what to expect when you visit us. The following questions and answers will help make your first and subsequent visits easier.
WHEN SHOULD I SHOW UP?
Our Sunday worship services start at 9:30 AM. Whether you are here early or arriving when the service begins, visitor parking can be found near the double glass door entrance. Come on in and you will be warmly greeted, given a program, and directed toward available seats.
WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT?
Our worship services are central to the life of our church. The service lasts around 90 minutes during which you will hear hymns, contemporary worship music, and special music. We have time for prayer, announcements, birthdays and anniversaries, and a sermon. Our Pastor preaches from the Bible; verse by verse expounding on the truths of God’s Word and applying it to our congregation. This sometimes is a call to action, a call to belief, or a call to self-reflection. No matter what the sermon application is, you can trust that it will come from the Word of God.
WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?
Our services are not formal and we encourage people to dress casually in keeping with the laid back New England lifestyle, so come dressed however you feel comfortable. We’re thrilled that you’re joining us and want you to be more focused on the service than what you’re wearing. Dressed up or dressed down, we have a variety of styles at our services.
DO I HAVE TO GIVE AN OFFERING?
Each week, we take an offering that goes to support mission work, programs, staff, and our facility and grounds. This church is funded entirely by people’s giving. We don’t raise money for our budget through sales or suppers, but by the tithes and offerings of those who call this church home. As a guest, please do not feel any pressure to give. In fact, we discourage it. Giving and tithing is an act of worship for our regular attendees, allowing them to thank God for the work he is doing in their lives. If Oak Hill becomes a place you call home, then we encourage you to give. Until then, there is no obligation.
ARE THERE KIDS PROGRAMS AVAILABLE?
We are a families of families, and your entire family is welcome and encouraged to participate in the worship service. Each week we have a nursery for children 0-2 in the lower level nursery, and Cherub Church for children ages 2-5 in the Kid Zone. On the 2nd and 4th Sunday, Kids ages K-3rd grade will meet to review the themes and notes from the current sermons series to dig deeper into God's Word Together. Children are not a distraction to us, please let us all demonstrate how a Body of believers worships together by singing, giving and learning in God's Word.
Regardless of the age of your children, they are welcome to either stay with you or participate in one of the aforementioned learning environments. You can rest assured that they will be taken care of by our loving volunteers, who all have clear background checks. Your children will learn about the depths of God’s love and what that love means for their life.
WHAT WILL THE SERVICE BE LIKE?
Before you know it the worship band will begin playing and people will start singing. Don’t know the song? That’s okay! The words are projected and the songs are often repeated and before long it will become more familiar to you. We sing a mix of contemporary worship songs and hymns. We will sing for a little while, and somewhere before, during, or afterward, people are given an opportunity to say hello to one another. Don’t worry! Even though Oak Hill people are some of the friendliest people you will ever meet, no one will force you out of your comfort zone. After children are dismissed for Children’s Church, one of the pastors or elders will share teaching from the Bible. We call these weekly conversations because they are more conversational and focus on explaining the Bible through a series lasting from three to eight weeks, on a variety of topics. Each conversation lasts about 30 minutes. On the first Sunday of each month, we celebrate Communion to remember the death of Jesus on the cross.
WHAT HAPPENS AFTER SERVICE?
After Service, you are welcome to stay and chat in the sanctuary or lobby space and enjoy a cup of coffee. After Sunday worship, we offer classes on Sunday mornings from 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM. These are opportunities for spiritual growth for various age groups for children through adults. For more information on current Sunday school classes see the sign next to the connection point table in the lobby.
